1. M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story

Written and directed by Neeraj Pandey, this movie starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Kiara Advani in lead roles was an entertaining telling of humble beginnings as a Ticket Collector (TC) with Indian Railways to winning the Cricket World Cup as India’s Captain.

2. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is a Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra directed biopic based on The Flying Sikh, the late, Milkha Singh. The champion track athlete and Olympian was known for his brilliant performances in the 400m race, 200m race, and 4 x 400 m relay.   

The biopic is based on his autobiography The Race of My Life, written by Milkha Singh and his daughter Sonia Sanwalka. The movie gained huge success and was acclaimed by critics, becoming one of the most well-made Indian biopics in recent times.  

It captured the rags to fame story of a man who fought his demons tirelessly to bring glory to his motherland. Starring Farhan Akhtar as Milkha Singh, this movie is a must-watch for anyone looking to find an inspirational story. 

3. Paan Singh Tomar

For all the Irrfan Khan fans, Paan Singh Tomar, directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, is the perfect movie to reminisce the brilliance this man created on screen. The film follows a lesser-known story of the titular character and how the nation’s athletic hero turned into a rebel during his latter days.   

Not only did the film deliver a National Award for Best Actor to Irrfan Khan, but it also proved that some of the best Indian biopics are made in Bollywood too. 

4. Dangal

Another sports biopic that had to make it to the list, this Nitesh Tiwari-directed film, is probably the most successful Bollywood biopic in the box office. Starring Aamir Khan as Mahavir Phogat and debutants Sanya Malhotra and Fatima Sana Shaikh, the movie balanced emotion with entertainment.   

Fatima was cast as eldest daughter Geeta Phogat while Sanya was cast as Babita Phogat. Riddled with brilliant performances from the entire cast, Dangal is considered one of the best Indian biopics simply because of how moving it was. The story of their struggles in making a mark in a sport dominated by men unfolds gradually, creating hair-raising moments for you at every step.

5. Mary Kom

Based on the life of Olympic boxer Mary Kom, the film shows how her journey from the hills of Manipur to the world stage at the Olympics and Asian Games. Priyanka Chopra stars as the six-time world amateur boxing champion in this inspiring retelling by Omung Kumar.  

The movie does an excellent job in showing the adversity that MC Mary Kom had to face, right from convincing her parents to let her pursue boxing to reinforcing North-Eastern contribution in India’s national pride.
